Founded in 1946 we will rapidly be celebrating our 70th Year of trading!   Over this time we have built a wealth of experience and knowledge.

We take our experience and our imagination to provide an excellent service for our Customers.  We understand that in these challenging and changing times we must adopt a flexible approach in order to meet our Customers’ needs.  Furthermore, we also understand that our Customers are adapting and developing to changing market demands.  Technology in our industry is rapidly changing and we continually seek to ensure our staff are competent and capable. This commitment has spearheaded the development of our business, building on existing relationships with our Customers and forging new alliances.

Design and Project Management

Thompson can provide a complete project management service from initial inception and design to project completion. Our design team has a wealth of experience and we work with a number of trusted partners to ensure a compliant and sustainable design.

Mechanical and Electrical Engineering

Thompson’s highly skilled workforce undertake a wide range of electrical engineering and contracting across the UK in various business sectors from industrial to commercial, healthcare and education.  Electrical engineering and contracting has been the backbone of Thompson’s activities since the company was formed in 1946.

We work with a number of industry partners to offer a combined M&E Service.

Lighting System Installation and LED

We’ve also undertaken retrofit programmes for our Customers looking to take advantage of new LED technology providing cost saving and carbon reduction in line with targets.

Energy Saving Installations and Controls

Lighting controls can provide significant energy saving and assist user comfort.  When there is a good level of daylight ingress lighting can be automatically dimmed whilst maintained an adequate illumination level and can be automatically switched off when presence is no longer detected.  Are you still switching your lights off at the switch?   There are many opportunities for energy saving in this area and we can help you achieve this and save you money!

Test and Inspection

Ensure your facilities are fully compliant with our highly experienced inspection team. Using the latest technology we can produce fast reports and provide you with reminders for future tests so you don’t need to worry.

Fire Alarm and Emergency Lighting

Our in house specialist and industry partners offer an installation and maintenance service to ensure your safety systems are in full working order and compliant with current legislation.

Planned and Reactive Maintenance

Thompson has provided a planned and reactive maintenance service to its Customers throughout its history.  Our highly skilled operatives are attending call outs daily.  We have tracking facilities to locate the nearest engineer and are able to direct our engineers to electrical breakdown situations as quickly as practically possible.

Typical breakdown situations can range from the on-site repair and re-lamping of defective light fitting, through to the support of customers who have suffered major power outages due to fire and flooding.

We also provide planned maintenance packages for our Customers who require scheduled maintenance visits to their facilities to ensure they are fully compliant with their legal obligations and ensure their lighting and equipment is operating to its full potential.

NICEIC

Thompson are registered with the NICEIC under the Approved Contractor Scheme and Domestic Installer Schemes.   The NICEIC has been assessing the electrical competence of electricians for over fifty years and currently maintains a roll of over 26,000 registered contractors.

Approved contractors undergo a rigorous assessment process, covering a representative sample of their work, their premises, documentation, equipment, and the competence of their key supervisory staff. They are then re-assessed on a regular basis to ensure continued compliance.

ECA

Thompson has been an ECA member since 1975.  Founded in 1901, the Electrical Contractors’ Association (ECA) is the UK’s leading trade association representing the interests of contractors who design, install, inspect, test and maintain electrical and electronic equipment and services..  Through our membership we have forged valuable links with other contractors, business support services.  The ECA work with regulatory bodies, government and opinion formers to build an efficient and sustainable industry, based on high standards of training and practice. Through representation and lobbying, the ECA actively leads on key issues including safety, training, qualification and technological development.

Thompson are proud of our association with the ECA and have endeavoured to work closely with them to improve the industry.  Alan Thompson former Managing Director of the Company served as the Association President in 1992.

OHSAS 18001

“The next step following our CHAS Accreditation was to achieve certification to the British Standard OHSAS18001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management. This was achieved in January and demonstrates that our robust systems have been independently assessed and verified.” The Company is aware of its continued need to evolve and improve to survive in today’s climate and believes that offering clear demonstration of compliance with known standards is the reason for its success. The Company has now developed an integrated management plan in accordance with the internationally accepted ISO standards. ISO 14001

In 2011 after a six month implementation process the Company achieved ISO14001 accreditation to the Environmental Standard. From 2009 the Company recognised that despite the prevailing recession the company still needed to invest in continual improvement to ensure we stand out against the competition.

Sustainability

Health and Safety

We recognise and accept our responsibility as an employer for providing a safe and healthy working environment for all employees and to avoid risk to the health and safety of others who may be affected by our activities.  We will take all reasonable steps within our power to meet this responsibility.

The company has committed to the health and safety of its workforce and customers and has been recognised in its endeavours by achieving certification to the British Standard OSHAS18001 for Occupational Health and Safety.  The Company also maintains its accreditation to CHAS.  More information can be found on our Accreditation and Certification page.

All our employees are trained to an appropriate standard to ensure they can undertake their activities safely.  Thompson can demonstrate compliance with the CDM Regulations, Main Contractor and Customer requirements.  A copy of our full Health and Safety Statement is available on request.

Environment

We are a professional and environmentally conscious organisation and acknowledge that our activities may potential impact on the environment.  We have developed an Environmental Policy and Management System and as such were certificated to the British Standard for Environmental Management ISO14001 in 2010.  We comply with all appropriate legislation and can assist our Customers in meeting their environmental targets by offering energy saving solutions for lighting and power.  We operate tracking facilities in our vehicles to better manage our fleet and educate our employees on the changes we can make to reduce our environmental impact.  A full copy of our Environmental Policy and Management System is available on request.

Corporate Social Responsibility

We are committed to ensuring that our business is conducted in all respects according to rigorous ethical professional and legal standards.  We understand that we have a responsibility to be a responsible corporate citizen by supporting appropriate non-political and non-sectarian projects, organisations and charities.  We play an active role in the local community and were proud participants in the 2012 Preston Guild Trades Procession (for those outside the area this is a whole town celebration which takes place every 20 years dating back to the Middle Ages!  In addition we support a number of sports team by sponsoring kits and supplies including Longsands Lynx JFC and Cardinal Newman College basketball team, we have even walked on Fire for charity!  We employ from the area local to our base and in areas local to our projects.  A full copy of our CSR Policy is available on request.
